Muslim Matrimony in the USA: Matches Who Live Here

NRI Hearts helps Muslim families of Indian origin find a match who already lives in the United States: someone settled in the same country, who understands both the masjid community here and the family back in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kerala or Gujarat. A son or daughter can run their own profile, or a parent can create one on their behalf.

Before a Muslim profile appears here, its email is verified and our team reviews it by hand. Signing up and browsing matches are both free.

Search by language, region and family background

Indian Muslim families in the US come from very different traditions: Urdu-speaking families from Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh, Malayali families from Kerala, Gujarati families including Bohra, Khoja and Memon communities, and Bengali and Kashmiri families. Most people say in their profile which language, region and practice they are looking for, so the other family knows from the start.

Many families also care about the school of thought (Sunni or Shia, and sometimes the community within it). Write your preference plainly in your biodata rather than leaving it to a first meeting.

Nikah and the marriage licence: what US masjids ask for

A nikah on its own doesn't make a marriage legal in the US. Many large masjids will only perform a nikah once the couple has a state marriage licence from the county, because their nikahs are also legal marriages. The imam signs the licence after the ceremony. A few examples from masjids' own pages:

  • Texas: the Islamic Society of Greater Houston asks for legal marriage documentation from the State of Texas, two Muslim witnesses and at least a week's notice. It also reminds couples that a Texas licence can't be used for the first 72 hours (ISGH).
  • Illinois: the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park requires a county marriage licence, a premarital counselling session, two adult Muslim male witnesses (the wali doesn't count) and does not perform online or phone nikahs (Islamic Foundation).
  • Virginia: the ADAMS Center in Sterling requires a county licence dropped off at least 7 days before the nikah, premarital counselling, and two witnesses the couple brings themselves (ADAMS Center).
  • Georgia: Al-Farooq Masjid in Atlanta performs nikahs by appointment with the imam and asks for a valid licence from the county probate court (Al-Farooq Masjid).
  • California: MCC East Bay in Pleasanton asks for a US marriage licence, two Muslim witnesses, the wali and an agreed mahr, and only performs nikahs for couples who are both Sunni (MCC East Bay).
  • New Jersey: the Islamic Society of Central Jersey in South Brunswick asks couples to bring their marriage permit from the township and book well ahead (ISCJ).

Mahr, the wali and the nikah papers

Families usually agree the mahr (the bride's marriage gift from the groom) and who will act as the bride's wali before the date is fixed, and both are normally recorded in the nikah papers. When one family is in India, agree early who will travel and who will be the witnesses, since many masjids don't supply them.

How US courts treat a written mahr differs from state to state. If the amount is large or the terms matter to your family, ask a family lawyer in the state where you live before the nikah.

Masjids and community events where families meet

Masjid communities are still where many introductions start in the US, through a family friend, a sisters' circle or a community dinner. Some masjids and national organisations now run their own matrimonial services and events too:

Questions to settle before families say yes

A US life raises its own questions: which city the person lives in, their immigration status (citizen, green card, or a work or student visa), who would relocate, and how much each family expects to be involved. Families need to confirm these answers themselves, since NRI Hearts does not check visa status, marital status or income.

Use our NRI groom and bride verification checklist to see where each answer can be confirmed officially, and read our safety tips before sharing personal details.

Questions families ask

Is there a free Muslim matrimony site in the USA?

Yes. On NRI Hearts, registering, creating a profile and searching for Muslim brides and grooms in the USA are free, and so is our marriage biodata maker. Sending messages to other families needs a paid plan.

Can a mother or father in India create the profile for their child in the USA?

Yes. Pick "My Son" or "My Daughter" at sign-up and manage the account yourself; the photo and every detail must belong to your son or daughter, not to you. See how to register for each step.

Is a nikah legally valid in the USA?

Only with a state marriage licence. Get the licence from the county first; the imam signs it after the nikah and it is returned to the county. Large masjids such as ISGH in Houston, the Islamic Foundation near Chicago and the ADAMS Center in Virginia won't perform a nikah without one.

Can I say which school of thought or community I'm looking for?

Yes. Write it in your biodata, for example Sunni or Shia, and the language or community you prefer. It saves both families time, and some masjids have their own rules about who they will marry.

How does NRI Hearts verify Muslim profiles?

Every profile's email is confirmed, and a member of our team reads each profile before it goes live. A member who takes a short live selfie gets a Photo verified badge. Documents, visa status and marital status are not checked by us, so please confirm them with the other family.
