How this panchang is calculated

Every value on this page is calculated for the city's own latitude and longitude, then shown in its local time. That matters abroad: Rahu Kaal and choghadiya are slices of the local day from sunrise to sunset, so a panchang printed for Delhi or Hyderabad is wrong by hours in Dallas, London or Sydney.

The tithi, nakshatra and yoga change at the same instant everywhere in the world, so the clock time differs by time zone. Because the panchang day starts at local sunrise, a festival can fall on a different date abroad than in India.

Sun and Moon positions come from a standard astronomical model, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa followed by most Indian panchangs. Sunrise is the moment the top of the Sun appears, allowing for atmospheric refraction. Expect a minute or two of difference from other panchangs; for a wedding or griha pravesh muhurat, confirm with your family priest.

Questions

Why do I need a panchang for my own city?

Rahu Kaal, choghadiya and muhurats are slices of the local day between sunrise and sunset, so a panchang made for an Indian city gives times that are hours off in New York, London or Sydney. Pick your city for times worked out for where you live.

Is the tithi the same everywhere?

A tithi starts and ends at the same moment worldwide, but that moment falls at a different clock time in each country. Because the panchang day starts at local sunrise, the tithi of the day, and so the date of a fast or festival, can differ between India, the US, the UK and Australia.

Which ayanamsa is used?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard used by most Indian panchangs. Sun and Moon positions come from a standard astronomical model, and times usually agree with other Lahiri panchangs to within a minute or two.

My city isn't listed. Which page should I use?

Use the nearest listed city in the same time zone. Rahu Kaal and choghadiya shift by roughly four minutes for every degree of longitude east or west, so a city an hour's drive away is usually within a few minutes.
