What a panchang tells you
Tithi
The lunar day: each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun. Fasts and festivals are set by tithi.
Nakshatra
Which of the 27 star groups the Moon is in. Used for naming, muhurats and kundali matching.
Yoga and karana
Two more measures of the Sun and Moon together; with tithi, nakshatra and weekday they make the five limbs (pancha anga).
Rahu Kaal
An eighth of the daytime, different each weekday, that many families avoid for starting anything new.
Choghadiya
The day and night split into eight periods each, rated good, neutral or bad. Popular in Gujarati and Marwari families.
Abhijit Muhurat
About 48 minutes around local noon, considered auspicious for most work.
How this panchang is calculated
Every value on this page is calculated for the city's own latitude and longitude, then shown in its local time. That matters abroad: Rahu Kaal and choghadiya are slices of the local day from sunrise to sunset, so a panchang printed for Delhi or Hyderabad is wrong by hours in Dallas, London or Sydney.
The tithi, nakshatra and yoga change at the same instant everywhere in the world, so the clock time differs by time zone. Because the panchang day starts at local sunrise, a festival can fall on a different date abroad than in India.
Sun and Moon positions come from a standard astronomical model, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa followed by most Indian panchangs. Sunrise is the moment the top of the Sun appears, allowing for atmospheric refraction. Expect a minute or two of difference from other panchangs; for a wedding or griha pravesh muhurat, confirm with your family priest.
Questions
What is Rahu Kaal today in Australia?
It depends on your city, because Rahu Kaal is calculated from local sunrise and sunset. Today it is 2:18 PM to 3:54 PM in Sydney and 1:39 PM to 3:15 PM in Perth, in local time. The table on this page lists all 4 cities.
What is today's tithi in Australia?
At sunrise in Sydney today it is Shukla Chaturthi, which ends at 6:43 AM AEDT. The tithi changes at the same moment everywhere, so the clock time is earlier in time zones further west.
Can I use an Indian panchang in Australia?
Not for timings. Rahu Kaal, choghadiya and muhurats are slices of the local day, so an Indian panchang's times are wrong by hours in Australia. Even the date of a festival can differ, because the panchang day starts at local sunrise.
Why do Ekadashi and other fasting dates sometimes differ between temples?
Most calendars observe a tithi on the day it is current at local sunrise, so the date can differ from India and between cities far apart. Some traditions add further rules for Ekadashi, so temples can disagree by a day. Follow your own temple or family priest.
