How to Verify an NRI Groom (or Bride) Before Marriage: A Checklist

By Venkata Nagireddi, Founder & CEO, NRI Hearts (Atlanta, GA)

Families in India are often asked to say yes to someone who lives thousands of miles away. This checklist sets out what to verify before an NRI marriage, and every step links to the official source it comes from, mainly the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the National Commission for Women (NCW). It is written around a groom because that is how most families search, but every step works the same way if you are vetting an NRI bride.

What should you check before marrying an NRI?

Check that the person's status is what they say it is: marital status, immigration status, employment, finances, criminal record and family background. That list comes straight from the MEA guidance booklet on marriages to overseas Indians, which asks families to verify each one. The twelve steps below turn it into actions you can take.

Marital status

  1. Get marital status in writing. The MEA booklet says to find out whether the person is single, divorced, separated or widowed and to get this "in a written and notarized form", and suggests an affidavit from the spouse stating present marital status.
  2. Ask for a single-status certificate where relevant. MEA's bachelorhood / single-status certificate page describes a certificate of eligibility to get married, issued by a competent court or SDM for the applicant's home area, then counter-attested by the state Home Department and attested by MEA. Ask how and where the document you are shown was issued.

Immigration status

  1. Ask what visa or residence status they hold. Both the MEA booklet and the NCW NRI Cell list immigration status, type of visa and eligibility to take a spouse to the other country as things to verify, and the booklet adds checking the visa and passport themselves.
  2. Read the official spouse page for their country yourself. Don't rely on what anyone tells you about sponsorship. In the US, USCIS's Form I-130 page says the petition is for a US citizen or lawful permanent resident; our US marriage visa guide explains the routes. In the UK, see GOV.UK's partner or spouse visa page, which lists the statuses the partner in the UK must hold. In Canada, see IRCC's sponsor your spouse, partner or child page; in Australia, Home Affairs' Partner visa (apply overseas) page; and in the UAE, the u.ae family residence visa page, which says employers and employees with valid UAE residence visas can sponsor their families. Rules change, so check the page on the day.

Employment and income

  1. Confirm the job with the employer, not only with papers. The MEA booklet says financial status should be verified with the employer, and the MEA FAQ on marriages to NRIs lists the details to check: qualification and post, salary, office address, and the employer and its credentials. Find the company's contact details yourself rather than using ones you were given.
  2. Look at tax returns and property papers. The booklet suggests checking tax returns for the preceding three years, bank account papers and property papers.

Family and local references

  1. Speak to people in the country where they live. The MEA booklet suggests contacting the Indian embassy, the employer, local Indian associations, and friends or relatives in that country. It also lists criminal antecedents and family background among the things to verify.
  2. Get to know the family over time. The NCW NRI Cell says a marriage should not be finalised without meeting the family, and the MEA booklet warns against blindly trusting any bureau, agent or middleman.

Meeting before you decide

  1. Meet in person, and video call before that. MEA and NCW both advise against finalising a marriage over long distance, on the phone or by email. The cybercrime.gov.in matrimonial fraud awareness brochure adds that someone who avoids video chat or meeting may be using photos that aren't theirs, and advises verifying NRI profiles' identity and documents in person.

Registration and documents

  1. Register the marriage in India before anyone leaves. The MEA FAQ says to register the marriage with the Registrar in India before you or your spouse leave, and to keep the certificate and a copy with you and your family. NCW and the booklet also advise against agreeing to hold the marriage in a foreign country.
  2. Keep copies of passports, visas and key papers. The booklet says, "don't part with your passport" and to keep at least one copy. NCW advises keeping a bank account in your own name for emergencies, and the booklet suggests arranging one for the bride abroad.

Money

  1. Never pay for a visa or sponsorship promise. The fraud awareness brochure says never to send money. A genuine spouse application is made to the government agencies linked in step 4, not through someone you met on a matrimonial site.

Alongside these checks, many families also compare horoscopes with a kundali match and exchange a marriage biodata. For the wider timeline, see our NRI marriage planning guide.

How do I check if an NRI groom is already married?

Ask for his marital status in writing, notarised, as the MEA booklet on marriages to overseas Indians advises, and where relevant ask for a bachelorhood or single-status certificate. Then confirm it independently through references in the country where he lives, such as his employer, local Indian associations and people who know him there.

A document on its own proves less than you might think, which is why the MEA booklet pairs it with checks through the employer and the local Indian community.

How can I check his visa or green card status?

Ask which visa or residence status he holds and whether it lets him bring a spouse, then read that country's official government page yourself. MEA and the NCW both list immigration status, type of visa and eligibility to take a spouse abroad among the things to verify before marriage.

Start from the official pages in step 4 rather than a forwarded screenshot. Ask to see the actual visa or residence document when you meet, and keep a copy.

What are the warning signs of NRI marriage fraud?

A matrimonial fraud awareness brochure from India's cybercrime.gov.in portal lists calls from many numbers with no number to call back, little or no social media presence, declarations of love very early, questions about your finances early on, and reluctance to video chat or meet. Any request for money, including for a visa or sponsorship, is a reason to stop.

The brochure also suggests using a separate email address for matrimonial sites and keeping family informed. Our online matrimony safety tips explain how to block someone and stay safe while you talk.

Where can a woman complain if an NRI husband abandons her?

She can approach the NRI Cell of the National Commission for Women, which handles complaints such as desertion, dowry demands, confiscation of passports and a wife's inability to join her husband abroad. If she is abroad, the MEA FAQ says she can approach the nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate and the local police.

The NCW page gives the cell's email as nricell-ncw@nic.in and lists an online complaint option. The MEA FAQ also describes help with legal costs for deserted women, applied for through Indian Missions and Posts, with eligibility conditions set out in the FAQ. Online fraud can be reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which the brochure names; for emergencies it says to dial 100.

Should the marriage be registered before leaving India?

Yes. The MEA FAQ says to register the marriage with the Registrar in India before either of you leaves the country, and to keep the certificate and a copy with you and your family in India.

Does a matrimonial site verify these things?

Usually not, so ask each site exactly what it checks. Every profile is email-verified and manually reviewed by our team before it goes live. We do not check identity documents, marital status, immigration status, employment or income. Those checks are the family's, which is why this checklist exists.

Our guide to choosing a matrimonial site lists the questions to ask any site, and our NRI matrimony page shows how NRI Hearts works for families in India.
