NRI Marriage and Germany: Find the Guide for Your Situation
By Venkata Nagireddi, Founder & CEO, NRI Hearts (Atlanta, GA)
A match with someone settled in Germany raises the immigration question almost as soon as the families start talking. The answer depends on one detail that is easy to skip: the residence permit the partner in Germany actually holds. This page sends you to the guide written for that permit.
Which visa applies when you marry someone living in Germany?
The spouse coming from India applies for a family reunion visa, but the conditions depend on the partner's permit in Germany. Find the partner's status in the table below and read the guide written for it.
| If your partner in Germany holds | Start here | What changes for the spouse |
|---|---|---|
| An EU Blue Card | Marrying a Blue Card Holder in Germany | No German test before the visa; can work on arrival |
| German citizenship (often a former Indian citizen) | Marrying a German Citizen | A1 German required; a shorter route to citizenship |
| A skilled worker permit (§18a/§18b) | Germany Spouse Visa from India | No German test before the visa; marriage timing or two years on the permit matters |
| A student residence permit | Marrying an Indian Student in Germany | Timing of the marriage matters; A1 German required |
| A Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) | Marrying Someone on a Chancenkarte | Joining usually has to wait for a work permit |
| Any of these, and you want the full process | Germany Spouse Visa from India | Documents, A1 rules, fees and verification |
Why does the partner's residence permit matter so much?
The permit decides whether the spouse must pass a German test first, whether the couple can apply straight away, and how secure the family's stay is. Two people can both be "settled in Germany" and still face very different paths for a spouse.
A partner who has just arrived to look for work is in a different position from one who has held a Blue Card for three years, even if both live in the same city. Ask which permit it is, in those words, early in the conversation.
Does the spouse need to speak German before moving?
Often yes: the general rule is basic German at A1 level before the visa is issued. Spouses of Blue Card holders and several groups of skilled workers are exempt, and the spouse visa guide sets out the full list.
The exemptions are written into §30 of the Residence Act. Spouses of students, Chancenkarte holders and German citizens (via §28) are not on that list.
Can the spouse work in Germany?
Yes, a spouse who arrives on a family reunion permit may work in any job, though regulated professions such as doctor, nurse or teacher also need professional recognition. Our guide to working in Germany as a spouse covers degree recognition.
The right to work comes from §4a of the Residence Act, and Make it in Germany states that spouses may take up employment without restriction.
What happens to Indian citizenship if one of you becomes German?
India does not allow dual citizenship, so an Indian who takes German citizenship stops being an Indian citizen. Many former Indian citizens then apply for an OCI card for travel to India, as the German citizen guide explains.
This is worth discussing before the wedding if either family owns agricultural land in India, because OCI holders cannot acquire agricultural land, farmhouses or plantation property.
What should NRI families settle before the wedding?
Agree on who moves, which permit the partner in Germany holds, whether the spouse needs A1 German, and how long the couple may live apart while the visa is processed. These questions decide whether a match works in practice, and they are easier to raise before an engagement than after one.
NRI Hearts does not check anyone's visa or residence status. Every profile is email-verified and manually reviewed by our team before it goes live, but confirming a partner's permit is the family's job: ask to see the residence permit card itself.
Where should you check the official rules?
The German Missions in India publish the visa requirements for applicants from India, and the Residence Act is the legal source behind them. Treat every guide on this site, and every agency blog, as a starting point rather than the final word.
