Marrying an EU Blue Card Holder in Germany
By Venkata Nagireddi, Founder & CEO, NRI Hearts (Atlanta, GA)
Many Indian professionals in Germany, especially in IT and engineering, hold an EU Blue Card. For a family arranging a match, that is good news: it is the residence permit with the easiest path for a spouse. This guide explains what the Blue Card means for the person joining, and what to confirm before the wedding.
What does a Blue Card mean for the spouse?
The spouse of a Blue Card holder can join without passing a German test first, and can work in any job after arriving. The Blue Card also shows the job paid at least the Blue Card salary threshold when the card was issued.
The language exemption is in §30(1) of the Residence Act, and the right to work is in §4a. The usual conditions still apply: both spouses at least 18, enough living space (§29), a secure income (§5) and a registered marriage. The full application is covered in our Germany spouse visa guide.
How does a Blue Card compare with other permits for a spouse?
Among the permits Indian partners most often hold, the Blue Card is the simplest for a spouse: no A1 test, and the couple can apply as soon as the partner holds the card, whenever they married. Skilled worker permits also skip A1 but add a timing condition.
| Partner's permit | Spouse needs A1 first? | Spouse can work? | Extra condition for joining |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU Blue Card | No | Yes | None beyond the general ones |
| Skilled worker (§18a/§18b) | No | Yes | Married before the permit was issued and staying over a year, or two years on the permit |
| Student (§16b) | Yes | Yes | Married before the permit was issued and staying over a year |
| German citizen | Yes | Yes | None; the income rule is normally waived |

What salary does a Blue Card require?
From 1 January 2026, the minimum is €50,700 gross a year, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations such as IT and engineering, and for graduates whose last degree is under three years old. The figures are revised each year, so check the current ones.
These thresholds are published by the German Missions in India and Make it in Germany. Families sometimes hear a salary in a match conversation; it is reasonable to ask whether the partner holds a Blue Card or a different work permit, since the answer changes the spouse's path.
How soon can a Blue Card holder get permanent residence?
A Blue Card holder can apply for a settlement permit after 27 months with basic German (A1), or after 21 months with B1 German. That makes the family's long-term stay in Germany more secure.
The rule is in §18c(2) of the Residence Act. The spouse's own path to permanent residence is assessed separately, so the spouse should also start learning German early.
What should the family confirm before the wedding?
Confirm that the partner's card really is an EU Blue Card, how long the employment contract runs, and where the couple will live. A Blue Card is printed on the residence permit card, so asking to see it is a normal request.
NRI Hearts does not verify anyone's visa, job or income. Every profile is email-verified and manually reviewed by our team before it goes live, so checking these details is the family's responsibility.
