Getting married in Florida: marriage licence
Any Florida county clerk can issue the licence, and the wedding must take place in Florida. In Hillsborough (Hillsborough County Clerk) and Orange (Orange County Clerk of Courts) counties:
- Fee: $86, or $61 with a premarital preparation course certificate.
- Waiting period: 3 days if either partner is a Florida resident, waived with the course certificate; no wait if both live outside Florida (Florida Statutes §741.04).
- Valid for 60 days. Both partners come in person, 18 or older, with original ID (driver's licence, state ID or passport) and a Social Security number for US citizens and residents.
Planning an Indian wedding in Florida
- Temple ceremony: the Jacksonville Hindu Temple (Hindu Society of Northeast Florida) and ISKCON Alachua (Alachua Hare Krishna Temple) list weddings among their services; the Tampa gurdwara takes Anand Karaj enquiries (Sikh Gurdwara of Tampa Bay). Ask other temples directly.
- Licence timing: apply within 60 days of the wedding, and at least 3 days before if you are Florida residents without the course.
- Destination weddings: couples who both live outside Florida have no waiting period, but still need the licence before the ceremony.
- Guests from India: they need US visitor visas, so send invitations early.
