Sri Lankan Tamil or Indian Tamil: does it matter?

Most Tamil families in the UK trace their roots to Sri Lanka, and a smaller community comes from Tamil Nadu. Many families are happy to look across both. Others prefer someone from the same side, because of how the wedding will be done, the way Tamil is spoken at home, or simply which relatives will be involved.

Neither choice is wrong, but say which it is early. Put where your family is from in your biodata, and whether you are open to both. It saves both families an awkward conversation after the first meeting.

Where Tamil families live in the UK

In London, the largest Tamil communities are in Harrow in the north-west, East Ham and Ilford in the east, and Tooting in the south. Outside London there are established communities in Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester and several other cities. So a match “in the UK” can still mean a two-hour journey, and it is worth checking the town before the families meet.

For many families the temple is still where introductions start, and where the wedding or engagement may later be held. These are some of the best-known Tamil temples:

  • Highgate Hill Murugan Temple, Highgate Hill, Islington
  • London Sri Murugan Temple, Manor Park, Newham
  • London Sri Mahalakshmi Temple, East Ham, Newham
  • Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple, Ilford, Redbridge
  • Shree Ghanapathy Temple, Wimbledon, Merton
  • Muththumari Amman Temple, Tooting, Wandsworth
  • Shri Kanaga Thurkkai Amman Temple, West Ealing, Ealing
  • Leicester Sri Murugan Temple, Leicester
  • Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple, Tividale, West Midlands

A matrimony site doesn't replace those networks. It widens them, so you can meet families beyond your own temple and town.

Tamil matrimony WhatsApp groups: what to watch for

WhatsApp groups are popular with UK Tamil families because they are free and run by people you may know. They work best for introductions within a close circle. As groups grow, a few problems tend to appear:

  • Biodatas and photos get forwarded to people you never agreed to share them with.
  • Nobody checks that a profile is real or that the person is still single.
  • Requests for money, often for a visa, a fee or an emergency, are a common scam pattern.

On NRI Hearts you choose whether your photo is visible, every profile is reviewed before it goes live, and you can block anyone you don't want to hear from. Whatever you use, never send money to someone you haven't met, and read our safety tips before the first call.

Porutham when one of you was born in the UK

Many Tamil families still match jathagam before a first meeting. When one person was born in London and the other in Jaffna or Madurai, each chart has to be calculated for its own birthplace and time zone, or the nakshatra and the porutham result can come out wrong.

Our free kundali matching does that, and checks the ten South Indian poruthams alongside guna milan. Tamil Brahmin families can also browse Iyer matrimony in the UK.

Marrying someone from Sri Lanka or India

If your match lives in Sri Lanka or India and will join you here, the couple will need a UK partner visa, which has income and English language requirements. Check the current rules on GOV.UK before the engagement, not after, because the rules change. Our UK matrimony page explains how the visa affects timing.

Questions Tamil families ask

Is NRI Hearts free for Tamil families in the UK?

Registering, creating a profile, searching and our kundali matching and biodata tools are free. Direct messaging with matches and detailed kundali reports are on subscription.

Can I find both Sri Lankan Tamil and Indian Tamil matches?

Yes. NRI Hearts is open to Sri Lankan Tamil and Tamil Nadu families alike. Say in your biodata where your family is from and whether you are open to both, so the right families reach out.

Can parents search for their son or daughter?

Yes. A parent or relative can create and manage the profile, and say so on it when registering, whether the parents live in the UK, Jaffna or Chennai.

Does NRI Hearts check Tamil profiles?

Every profile is email-verified and manually reviewed by our team before it goes live. We do not check identity documents, marital status, immigration status or income, so speak by video, meet in person and involve family before you decide.

Can we match horoscopes (porutham) on NRI Hearts?

Yes. Our free kundali matching checks the ten South Indian poruthams and guna milan from each person's date, time and place of birth, so a child born in London and a partner born in Jaffna or Madurai are each read for their own birthplace.
